"Buy the Wider One Instead" 2006-10-30
By David Hill
I just finished installing this 22 1/2" wide ladder. The installation went fine for the most part. It had a handrail near the top which interefered with the spring mechanism during opening, but the handrail was useless so I removed it. But most of all, I really wish that I had bought the 25" unit (Werner part number W2510). This one has only 17" of space between the springs at the narrowest point near the top, not enough for my shoulders, let alone trying to carry something.

 "simple installation" 2005-10-02
By M. B. Walters (Round Mountain, NV USA)
I purchased this ladder for a "sleeping loft" above my home office. The office ceiling is only 8ft high and my husband and I didn't have any experience with folding access ladders so we weren't sure if they could be altered to fit the height we needed. Once again, Amazon.com made my purchase easy with both rating/reviews and their return policy.

This ladder fit perfectly with a small adjustment to shorten the length and installation was pretty straightforward and simple. No assembly needed for the ladder, the whole thing is framed in just like a door or window. The width is a little narrow on the steps as well as overall so lugging large items up and down these stairs would be difficult but for simple access to a loft, as in our setup, it works great. Also, the unfinished wood stairs had a couple of loose steps that could slip out from their notched siderails but that was remedied with some wood glue and a couple of screws. The stairs themselves will look very nice when I stain them to match the wood trim in the rest of the house. The pull cord was flimsy so we made a retrofit to accomodate our frequent use of the stairs. Overall, we are happy with this item and the loss of one star is only because of the loose steps.

As for Amazon.com -- I rate them a 10-star company and first source for everything I can't buy locally. Keep up the good work Amazon!

 "TRIM THE LEGS PROPERLY" 2005-03-23
By Tim Taylor (USA)
If the flooring below the attic ladder is carpet with typical backing/pad, the measurements you take to trim the legs can be deceiving. I trimmed mine without considering the flooring would compress to some extent when there is a load on the extended ladder. The ladder itself split at the rivets of the top section. I still give it a good rating though considering it was 4 years ago that the ladder split on one side and I've been using frequently since. Finally replacing now. So measure twice and cut conservatively.

 "W2508" 2003-06-22
By cindy (Texas)
Help - my rivetted mechanism has also broken on model W2508 and I don't know what to do - it's a real bummer - I can't see why I would need to buy a new attic stairway - can't I buy a new bracket and drill it into my existing frame.

"LADDER OFF BALANCE FROM USAGE" 2003-06-02
By BADDAD (LANHAM, MD USA)
WERNER USES A COUNTER BALANCE WER-55-1 FOR ALL ITS FOLDING ACCESS ATTIC LADDERS. BECAUSE THE COUNTER BALANCE IS TO ASSIST THE LADDER AS IT IS EXTENDED, THE MAKEUP OF THE MECHANISM (ALUMINUM) IS THE PROBLEM. THE MECHANISM BENDS AND ONCE THAT OCCURS REPLACING THE MECHANISM IS A PROBLEM. THE MECHANISM IS RIVETTED ONTO THE LADDERS FRAME AND THE RIVET(S) MUST BE DRILLED OUT. THIS MUST BE DONE OR YOU ARE FACED WITH REPLACING THE ENTIRE LADDER. GOOD LUCK.
